The Official Rules & Strategy Guide
Everything you need to know about the world's most dynamic team sport.
Score points by landing the ball on the opponent's court or forcing errors. In volleyball, the primary objective is to strategically ground the ball within the boundaries of the opponent’s court to earn a point.
Every team has 6 players on the court: three in the front row and three in the back row.
A team is allowed a maximum of three consecutive touches to return the ball, excluding blocks.
A player cannot hit the ball twice in succession. Touching the ball twice in a row results in a fault.
The game begins with a serve from behind the back boundary line, clearing the net to the opponent's side.
A point is scored on every single serve, regardless of which team performed the serve.
The ball is "IN" if it touches any part of the boundary line. It is "OUT" if it lands entirely outside the lines.
Matches are typically best-of-five sets. Sets are played to 25 points, and a team must win by two points [2, 7].
Players must rotate clockwise one position after winning the serve back from the opposing team [2, 10].
Touching the net during play is a fault and results in a point for the opposing team [2, 7].

The ball is considered in if it touches the boundary line; it is out if it lands completely outside the boundary lines [2, 4, 7].
